Serpentine

Serpentine stone is usually brown, green or black and is one of the softer stones worked in Zimbabwe.

It is an excellent material for the creation of intricate and complicated carving. You will often find most family or friendship group sculptures are carved from serpentine.

Many of the younger artists use serpentine to learn the basics of the trade before moving on to the harder materials.

Although we have never had a problem with serpentine stone being kept outside during the winter months, we would generally advise against serpentine sculptures wintering outdoors unless covered, or you feel it would be sheltered from frost.
